Does The Bible Contradict Science?

Whenever science has contradicted the Bible it has always been science that has changed. New discoveries, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, reinforce what the Bible has always said. On the other hand, new discoveries are constantly forcing science to change. For example, the word atom is derived from tomas, which means "to cut," and a, which means "not." A little over 100 years ago it was the view of science that the atom could not be split; but today the splitting of atoms is basis of atomic energy. An enormous amount of energy is released when atoms are split.

STARS: Jeremiah 33:22 states that the stars "cannot be numbered." This was written approximately 2600 years ago when the prevailing view was quite different. The Greek atronomer Hipparchus, in 150 B.C., said there were "less than 3,000 stars." Hebrews 11:12, written in the first century A.D., describes the stars as being "innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore." Science did not agree with the Bible until the telescope was invented in 1608 and used by Galileo to peer into space.

RAIN: Job 38:25 states that "the path of the thunderbolt" causes it to rain. In 1964 science discovered this same fact. The discharge of lightning changes the electrical polarity of water molecules which causes the water molecules to coalesce into raindrops.

TIME: One of the great discoveries of modern physics is that time had a beginning. We see this fact clearly stated almost 2,000 years ago in 2 Timothy 1:8-12 --"Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel." This was book was written by the apostle Paul when he was on death row (after the Roman empire turned against Christians). From his perspective death was merely a doorway from time to eternity in heaven -- "immortality," as he put it. In some translations the word "history" is used instead of time, but the word in the original Greek is "chronos."

MASS AND ENERGY CONSERVATION: Hebrews 4:3 states "the works were finished from the foundation of the world." No more matter or energy were created after the beginning. Science didn't embrace this fact until 1841 when Mayer formulated the law of mass and energy conservation, also known as The First Law of Thermodynamics, which states: the sum total of all mass and energy in the universe remains constant. One form of energy or mass may be changed into another form, but the total amount cannot increase or decrease.

ENTROPY: The Second Law of Thermodynamics states: there is a constant amount of energy, but in all energy transfers there is a loss in the amount of usable energy and an increase in the amount of useless energy. That means that everything is growing older, wearing out. In 700 B.C. God revealed this same fact to the prophet Isaiah -- "Lift up your eyes to the heavens [stars] and look on the earth beneath. For the heavens will vanish away like smoke, the earth will grow old like a garment, and those who dwell in it will die in like manner; but My salvation is forever, and My righteousness will not be abolished" (Isaiah 51:6).
The Bible is accurate about these facts of science as it is accurate about our need for the forgiveness of sins that is available to us through Jesus Christ! "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23).
